Air Fryer Grilled Cheese Sandwiches
Air fryer grilled cheese is crispy on the outside, perfectly melted inside, and easier to make than stovetop versions—no flipping in a pan required.
Ingredients (Makes 2 Sandwiches)
-
4 slices of bread (white, sourdough, or whole wheat)
-
4 slices of cheese (cheddar, American, mozzarella, or your favorite)
-
2–3 tablespoons softened butter or mayonnaise
Instructions
1. Preheat the Air Fryer
Preheat to 370°F (188°C) for 2–3 minutes.
2. Assemble the Sandwich
-
Spread butter (or mayonnaise) evenly on one side of each slice of bread.
-
Place cheese between the unbuttered sides.
-
The buttered sides should face outward.
3. Air Fry
-
Place sandwich in the air fryer basket in a single layer.
-
Cook at 370°F for 4–5 minutes.
-
Flip carefully.
-
Cook another 3–4 minutes, until golden brown and cheese is melted.
Tips for Best Results
-
Use toothpicks if the bread lifts due to air circulation.
-
Don’t overcrowd the basket.
-
Thicker bread may need an extra minute.
-
For extra crispiness, lightly spray the outside with cooking spray before air frying.
Flavor Variations
-
Garlic Grilled Cheese: Mix minced garlic into softened butter.
-
Tomato & Basil: Add thin tomato slices and fresh basil.
-
Ham & Cheese: Add deli ham for a heartier sandwich.
-
Three-Cheese: Combine cheddar, mozzarella, and provolone.
Cooking Time for Multiple Sandwiches
If making several at once, cook in batches for best crispiness. Stacking reduces airflow and can make bread soggy.
